With independence in EU we can be the Scotland of Kenmure Street

We can have a fairer, greener and better future as an independent Scotland in Europe.

With the powers of an independent country we can be the Scotland of Kenmure Street rather than Downing Street, says Scottish Green Co-leader Lorna Slater.

Speaking at the Believe in Scotland and Yes for EU march and rally in Edinburgh today, Ms Slater called for a fairer, greener, welcoming and independent Scotland in Europe.

Drawing contrast with the hostile environment of the Home Office, Ms Slater called for a Scotland where we look out for our neighbours and welcome people from around the world.

Addressing the rally, Ms Slater said:

“In 2014 we missed the chance to build something better. We missed the chance to build a new country. We can’t let the opportunity go by again.

“We’ve got a vision for building a better future and a fairer and greener Scotland.

“Every day when I’m at work I am asking what we can do to make things fairer, how we can make sure more people get a living wage, how we can do more for the climate, and I’m told ‘we can’t do that, those powers are not devolved.

“And that’s before Westminster began rolling back the powers that our Parliament has and disrespecting this Scottish Parliament.

“They’re pushing back on the work we are doing for equalities and for our environment, things we believe in deeply and that we know matter to the people of Scotland.

“We don’t have to be the Scotland of Downing Street. We can be the Scotland of Kenmure Street. A Scotland where we look out for our neighbours, no matter where they are from and we welcome people from around the world who make their home in Scotland.

“But we can only do that with the powers of an independent country. We can only remove the hostile Home Office and rejoin the EU as an independent country.”
