Renewables boost shows Scotland’s vast green potential

Scotland is leading climate action and supporting clean energy and greener jobs

Scottish Greens climate spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, has hailed new Scottish Energy Statistics that show a groundbreaking 10% increase in capacity for electricity generation from renewable sources in 2023 alone.

The figures show that Scotland is generating more electricity than we are using, with record production levels in the second half of the year.

Mr Ruskell said: “This is a really big step forward for green industries and our environment. It is a tribute to the great work being done all across our country.

“Clean, green and renewable energy is the safest, cheapest and best energy there is, and is right at the heart of our vision for a fairer, greener Scotland.

“We have a huge abundance of natural resources and a vast renewable potential that any country would envy, and the Scottish Greens are using our influence in government to ensure we use it.

“All of this is a stark contrast to the climate-wrecking UK government which is doubling down on fossil fuels and drilling their way into environmental breakdown.

“A just transition from oil and gas isn’t just an environmental necessity, it is a huge opportunity and can be key to rejuvenating our communities.

“By building on this success we can ensure that Scotland is leading the way on renewables and that we deliver a huge number of long-term jobs for skilled workers.

“These workers and their communities can and must be central to our efforts to rebuild an economy that works for people and planet.”
