Independent MSPs endorse Maggie!

We’re delighted that the two Independent MSPs – John Finnie and Jean Urquhart – have endorsed Maggie Chapman for the European election!

The two Highlands and Islands MSPs, who quit the SNP in 2012 after it abandoned its long-standing opposition to Scottish membership of NATO, made the call today at the Inverness conference of the Radical Independence Campaign.

Jean Urquhart said:

“John and I left the SNP because we believe that the goal of a Scotland of peace is fundamental to the independence movement.

“That goal cannot be realised while we are tied to the warmaking, nuclear alliance of NATO.

“Electing Maggie is the best way to show we want a peaceful Scotland, free from NATO. It will put independence negotiators on notice that the removal of Trident is not a bargaining chip.

“A vote for Maggie Chapman is a vote for peace.”

John Finnie said:

“Stopping UKIP means not only preventing their election, but standing up to their toxic politics. I’m voting for Maggie Chapman because she’s the candidate that can do both.

“Maggie and the Greens stand unapologetically for economic justice and against xenophobia. Her election would be a defeat for UKIP and a huge victory for egalitarian, internationalist Scottish values.

“Scots have a great opportunity here to send a message about what kind of Scotland we want. If, like me, you want a just and welcoming Scotland, I hope you’ll vote for Maggie Chapman on May 22.”

Maggie said:

“I am so honoured to have the support of John and Jean, both fearless champions for progressive values.

“Thanks to their moral courage, NATO membership is still an open debate. As Scotland’s Green MEP, I’ll repay their trust by fighting to win that debate.

“We can have a non-nuclear, non-NATO Scotland: a Scotland of peace.”
